Australia identifies strategic heavy rare earth potential
The Australian Government has identified several remote areas in Western Australia and the Northern Territory with high geological potential for heavy rare earth elements. The findings, announced in January 2026, highlight possible sources of dysprosium and terbium, which are critical for manufacturing high-performance permanent magnets used in energy, industrial, and defense technologies.
This discovery is part of the Resourcing Australia’s Prosperity initiative, a 35-year program led by Geoscience Australia. The project is supported by approximately 3.4 billion Australian dollars in government investment and aims to improve national geological knowledge to reduce uncertainty for mining companies.
While the preliminary assessments indicate promising areas, officials noted that these findings represent geological potential rather than confirmed, economically exploitable deposits. Further field work, including drilling, sample analysis, and economic studies, will be required to determine if the resources can be commercially developed.
