Australia implements wildlife protections against H5 bird flu
Australian wildlife authorities are implementing measures to protect native species from the H5 avian influenza virus. In New South Wales, a vaccination program is underway for little penguin colonies along the Illawarra and South Coast. Nearly 60 penguins at Barunguba Montague Island have received their first dose, with further operations planned for Big Island, Bowen Island, and other sites. The program involves weighing, microchipping, and using GPS mapping to monitor the birds.
In Western Australia, Perth Zoo has committed at least $500,000 to establish a triage and care facility specifically for black cockatoos. This hospital aims to provide infrastructure to respond to potential H5 incursions, as the species is already threatened. While Western Australia has not recorded a positive case since July, officials emphasize the need for preparedness following confirmed cases of H5 in other parts of Australia and the devastating impact the virus has had on global bird and seal populations.
