Australia-India cooperation sought for cochlear implant access

Australian High Commissioner to India Philip Green visited the I Can Hear Foundation in New Delhi to observe the impact of cochlear implant technology on children with profound hearing disabilities.

During his visit to the clinic in Lajpat Nagar, Green witnessed cochlear implant mapping and rehabilitation services. He emphasized the potential for cooperation between India and Australia to expand access to life-changing medical technologies. Green noted that early detection through newborn hearing screening and timely intervention are critical for ensuring children can benefit fully from such implants.

The High Commissioner described the foundation’s efforts as ‘amazing and selfless work’ that enables communication, education, and social participation for beneficiaries. Medical experts at the foundation highlighted ongoing challenges in the field, including financial barriers, social stigma, and inadequate access to specialized audiology and rehabilitation services.
