Australia infrastructure grants face scrutiny over 98% success rate

Research from the Centre for Public Integrity has revealed that nearly 98% of projects invited to apply for funding under the Albanese government’s infrastructure grant schemes ultimately received taxpayer money. The analysis found that 317 out of 325 projects invited under two previous invite-only programs were awarded funding, suggesting that departmental scrutiny may have functioned as a mere rubber stamp.

The findings have raised concerns regarding the integrity of a $560.9 million election grants program. Data indicates that approximately three-quarters of this funding was directed toward electorates held by the Labor Party prior to the last federal election.

Infrastructure Minister Catherine King defended a controversial $6 million grant for the Marrickville Golf Course in Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s electorate. While the grant was initially intended to address sewage issues, the NSW government later agreed to fund those specific works, shifting the Commonwealth’s commitment toward clubhouse improvements, landscaping, and stormwater harvesting.
