Australia launches $52m TRACK program to boost freight resilience

The Australian federal government has launched the Transport Resilience and Capacity Kickstart (TRACK) pilot program, a $52 million initiative designed to enhance the productivity and resilience of the nation’s freight industry. The program aims to encourage more fuel-efficient freight movements by shifting cargo from roads to rail and sea, which is expected to reduce diesel consumption, lower emissions, and ease road congestion.

Round 1 of the program offers $26 million in incentives specifically focused on moving more freight by rail. Applications for this initial round are open until October 1. Future rounds of the TRACK scheme are expected to include incentives for sea freight as well.

In conjunction with the program launch, the government has refreshed the Freight Industry Reference Panel. Chaired by Michael Byrne AM, the panel will provide expert advice to infrastructure and transport ministers on emerging industry issues. The panel will be supported by three new subcommittees dedicated to heavy vehicles, rail and ports, and shipping to assist in implementing the National Freight and Supply Chain Strategy.
