Australia launches H5 bird flu awareness campaign as cases rise
Australia is facing an increasing spread of H5 bird flu, with 652 confirmed cases detected nationwide. The highest concentrations of the virus have been recorded in South Australia with 319 cases and Victoria with 208 cases. Other recorded locations include New South Wales, Tasmania, Western Australia, and Queensland.
Agriculture Minister Julie Collins stated that while the disease has not yet been detected in the nation’s poultry or agricultural production systems, the government is investing over $270 million to safeguard the industry. A $2 million vaccination program has already reached approximately 10,000 native birds. To assist the public, the federal government has launched a six-week national awareness campaign titled ‘Bird flu. Know what to do’ across television, radio, and social media.
Wildlife experts have noted the impact on local fauna, including the death of over 1,000 crested terns and a long-nosed fur seal. Health experts warn that backyard bird feeding may exacerbate the crisis by creating high-density gathering points that accelerate viral transmission between species. The Emergency Animal Disease Hotline has received more than 51,000 calls regarding the outbreak.
