Australia launches Miscarriage Matters to curb pregnancy loss stigma
The Australian Government Department of Health, Disability and Ageing has introduced Miscarriage Matters, a national education and awareness program aimed at supporting families after early pregnancy loss. The initiative cites that one in four confirmed pregnancies ends in miscarriage, affecting roughly 285 Australian families each day.
The program provides practical resources—such as advice on offering chores, meals, and listening—and targets cultural and language barriers that can hinder help in multicultural communities. Program ambassador Jana Pittman, a three‑time Olympian and women's health doctor, stresses that silence perpetuates stigma, while advocate Dr Fatima El‑Assaad highlights the need for culturally responsive care for migrant families. Miscarriage Matters seeks to break taboos and equip the public with confident, compassionate ways to respond to miscarriage.
