Australia launches national plan for EV charging infrastructure

The Electric Vehicle Council has announced a $1.43 million project to develop a national charging road map for Australia. Supported by a $1.06 million investment from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA), the initiative aims to identify future charging needs, potential bottlenecks, and priority investment areas to accommodate the millions of electric cars and trucks expected on roads by 2035.

This planning follows a significant surge in electric vehicle adoption. By the end of June 2026, Australia had more than 600,000 battery-electric vehicles on its roads, serviced by over 11,000 public charging points. In September 2026, battery-electric models accounted for nearly one in four new car sales.

Separately, the Australian Energy Market Commission has approved a proposal that could see household power bills increase by approximately $1 per year to fund the rollout of kerbside EV charging infrastructure. However, Emergency Management Minister Kristy McBain clarified that the government is not proposing this levy, suggesting instead that companies profiting from EV charging should fund the necessary infrastructure expansion.
