Australia Launches Time‑Based Free Day‑time Electricity Tariff

On 1 July 2026 Australia rolled out a new electricity pricing scheme that makes power free between 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. in selected regions. The program aims to shift consumption to periods of high solar generation, reduce grid stress and encourage household battery use.

From 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. rates double compared with the normal tariff, while night‑time rates carry a 15 % discount. The reform has already cut electricity prices by 3.4 % to 21 % across different states. More than 400 000 homes now operate residential battery systems, and government incentives have shortened the pay‑back period for such storage from about ten years to two‑to‑three years.

The shift in demand is also lowering reliance on gas‑ and coal‑fired plants; natural‑gas consumption has fallen to its lowest level in 27 years. Officials expect the tariff to lower carbon emissions and make the grid more efficient while providing cost savings for consumers.
