Australia's Tony Burke postpones major immigration crackdown

Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke cancelled a National Press Club address in which the government was set to unveil a sweeping immigration reform. The plan aims to cut net overseas migration by up to 75,000 people over the next two years. Proposed measures include tighter work rights for asylum‑seeker applicants, stricter limits on family and spouse visas that could force applicants to remain overseas, and reduced allowances for backpacker stays. Cabinet ministers delayed the announcement after raising concerns about political backlash, economic costs and the impact on labour supply in key industries. The Minerals Council of Australia warned that suspending offshore skilled workers could create labour shortages and hurt export earnings. Refugee‑rights groups and community leaders warned the changes would increase exploitation of asylum seekers and separate families. The government has not confirmed the full package, and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is expected to oversee the final announcement when he returns from leave.
