Microsoft implements age verification for R18+ games in Australia

Microsoft is implementing age verification requirements for Australian users to access R18+ rated content on the Microsoft Store and Xbox Store. This move aligns with Australia's Age-Restricted Material Codes designed to prevent minors from accessing inappropriate content.

Starting in late August 2026, adult Xbox accounts may be required to verify their age before purchasing or playing mature-rated titles. Microsoft has notified users via email, noting that while previously owned games are exempt, verification will be necessary for new purchases and access to certain content. Methods for verification include using email, credit cards, government-issued IDs, or facial age estimation via a "secure selfie" through age assurance partner VerifyMy.

The implementation has met with mixed reactions from the gaming community. While some view the measures as a reasonable way to protect children, others have criticized the requirement as "extreme overreach" or an added layer of bureaucracy that complicates the user experience. Concerns regarding data privacy and the potential for increased surveillance have also been raised in relation to age verification technologies.
