Australia migration: Albanese and Taylor hold talks on intake reduction

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Opposition Leader Angus Taylor have held discussions regarding Australia’s migration numbers as the Labor government seeks to implement a crackdown on overseas intake.

Labor aims to reduce net overseas migration from 300,000 to 225,000. Because the government does not hold a majority in the Senate, it requires support from either the Coalition or the Greens to pass necessary legislation. While Albanese has sought common ground with Taylor, Coalition sources indicate that the two parties remain far apart on how to achieve these reductions.

If a bipartisan agreement is reached, the migration plan could be presented to Parliament as early as next week. If legislative support cannot be secured, the government may instead attempt to implement changes through regulation.
