Australia monitors algal bloom impacts on fishing and water safety

Authorities in Australia are monitoring the impacts of algal blooms on recreational fishing and water safety. In South Australia, the government will conduct an assessment of recreational fishing participation in 2026–27. This study, conducted by the University of Tasmania, aims to understand how algal bloom conditions and subsequent management arrangements have influenced fishing behavior and participation across the state since March 2025.

In Tasmania, a blue-green algae (BGA) bloom has been detected in Lake Sorell. Laboratory testing by CSIRO has confirmed that the identified species are non-toxic and do not pose a risk to recreational water users, meaning public access to the lake does not need to be restricted. While fish from Lake Sorell and Lake Crescent can be consumed, officials recommend washing fish in clean water and disposing of internal organs. Monitoring via satellite imagery and water quality testing will continue to track the situation.
