Australia moves to accelerate environmental approvals for major projects

The Albanese government has initiated the next stage of consultations to overhaul the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act. The reforms aim to accelerate environmental approvals for major energy, mining, and infrastructure projects to support Australia's changing economy.

Proposed changes include streamlined approvals for individual projects and the introduction of landscape-scale approvals. Additionally, the government plans to establish operating rules for the Restoration Contributions Holder, an independent office designed to use developer funds for strategic environmental restoration.

Concurrently, the Nationals have called for a Senate inquiry into the renewable energy rollout. Senator Ross Cadell proposed the inquiry to investigate whether regional communities are receiving a fair share of benefits from the clean energy transition, amid concerns regarding the social licence required for continued expansion in rural areas.
