Australia Parliament to debate childcare subsidies and social media reforms

The Australian Parliament is set to debate several significant policy measures, including a proposal to extend taxpayer-funded wage subsidies for approximately 200,000 childcare workers until late 2029. This extension aims to prevent childcare providers from raising fees following a Fair Work Commission-ordered wage rise for female-dominated industries.

Legislative focus will also turn to digital safety, with Communications Minister Anika Wells seeking amendments to strengthen the existing social media ban for minors. New draft laws regarding “digital duty of care” may require social media companies to provide an opt-out for algorithm-driven feeds, a move facing criticism regarding freedom of speech and the adequacy of proposed fines.

Additionally, the Liberal Party is promoting a plan to criminalize flag-burning, while Opposition Leader Angus Taylor has proposed an 80 per cent cut to tobacco excise to combat illegal imports.
