Australia pledges AUD 980 million in aid to Solomon Islands

Australia has proposed an AUD 980 million aid package to the Solomon Islands over ten years, linked to the finalization of a bilateral treaty. The package includes AUD 142 million to support Prime Minister Matthew Wale’s free education program and approximately AUD 68 million to support local development priorities for Members of Parliament.

Critics and analysts have raised concerns regarding the method of delivery. Directing funds toward individual constituencies rather than national planning mechanisms may bypass public institutions and inadvertently strengthen political patronage networks. This approach could conflict with Prime Minister Wale’s stated reform agenda aimed at dismantling cronyism and improving public finance accountability.

Opposition leader and former Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare has characterized the move as “foreign involvement in sovereign political affairs,” alleging the funding was intended to protect the current government from a no-confidence vote. The specific alignment of constituency-level funding with Australian risk and compliance requirements remains unclear.
