Australia pledges AUD$20 million for gender and disability inclusion in Tonga
Australia has committed AUD$20 million to support gender equality, disability equity, and social inclusion in Tonga from 2026 to 2029. The investment was announced by Australia’s Ambassador for Gender Equality, Michelle O’Byrne, during her inaugural visit to the country.
The funding is designed to support Tongan-led priorities, including the implementation of the Women’s Empowerment and Gender Equality Tonga (WEGET III) Policy and the National Disability Inclusive Development Policy. Key initiatives include violence prevention, survivor support, and strengthening the capacity of government and civil society organizations.
Specific programs to receive support include the Families Free of Violence initiative and an expanded partnership with the Women and Children Crisis Centre to enhance advocacy and services for survivors. The investment aims to expand access to services for women, girls, and people with disabilities to foster more resilient and inclusive communities.
