Australia political debates focus on arts industry and housing policy

Ahead of upcoming elections in Australia, major political discussions are centering on the arts and housing sectors. Live Performance Australia has urged candidates to address the needs of the live arts and entertainment industry. The organization highlighted that the sector contributes approximately $64 billion to the cultural and creative industries, representing about 2.5% of the national GDP.

In Victoria, political parties Labor, Liberal, and One Nation engaged in a debate regarding solutions to the housing crisis. Victorian Planning Minister Sonya Kilkenny announced an expansion of the 10-day planning permit process, allowing developments of up to four homes per block to be assessed more rapidly without council objection.

Opposition spokesperson David Southwick criticized the current government for failing to meet previous housing targets, while proposing to increase the land tax threshold to $300,000. One Nation leader Warren Pickering also expressed intentions to roll back windfall gains and land taxes if elected.
