Australia pork industry faces A$10 million money laundering probe
Four individuals associated with the Australian pork industry have been charged in connection with a major financial fraud and money laundering scheme. Authorities allege the group concealed approximately A$10 million (roughly Rp100 billion) in sales from official bookkeeping over nearly a decade, between 2017 and 2026.
The alleged fraudulent activities included altering expiration dates on frozen meat products and transporting cash between states using transport vehicles to evade detection. Following investigations by the Queensland Crime and Corruption Commission and the NSW Crime Commission, authorities seized assets valued at over A$25 million, including A$3 million in cash and two vehicles.
Legal experts noted the unusual nature of the case, as the use of the pork trade for interstate money laundering is a rare method of disguising criminal proceeds. The crackdown follows the expansion of Australia’s national anti-money laundering regulations to include a broader range of professional sectors.
