Australia preparedness: Emergency services urge burn-off and disaster registration

As warmer and drier conditions approach in Australia, emergency services and rural support organizations are urging residents and farmers to prepare for the upcoming fire season.

In Victoria, emergency services are encouraging landowners to register burn-offs online via the Fire Permits Victoria website. Currently, over 62 percent of registrations are still made by phone, which can strain Triple Zero Victoria call takers. Paul Santamaria, chief operations officer for Triple Zero Victoria, noted that online registration helps ensure call takers remain available for high-priority emergencies. CFA Chief Officer Jason Heffernan also advised online registration to avoid unnecessary emergency service callouts.

Simultaneously, the charity Rural Aid is urging farmers to register with the organization ahead of potential disasters. With the Bureau of Meteorology forecasting increased bushfire risk alongside potential storms and flooding, Rural Aid CEO John Warlters stated that early registration allows the charity to provide faster assistance, including financial aid, mental health support, and emergency supplies like hay and water, should disaster strike.
