The Australian government has proposed legislation that would require technology companies to allow users to disable content algorithms. This move aims to address concerns regarding the spread of extreme political views and harmful trends by giving users more control over their digital experiences.

To explore the impact of such a change, journalist Caitlin Cassidy conducted an experiment by disabling all artificial intelligence recommendations on Instagram for 24 hours. After unfollowing accounts not known in real life to ensure a purely chronological feed, Cassidy exhausted all new content within ten minutes. The app eventually notified her that she had reached the end of her updates for the past month.

Cassidy reported that the experience felt hollow, noting that without the constant stream of viral content, the remaining social interactions appeared focused more on self-promotion and corporate partnerships than genuine connection.
