Australia proposes new review pathways for aged care assessments
The Australian government is moving forward with legislative amendments to improve protections for older citizens, specifically addressing the use of the Integrated Assessment Tool (IAT). A Senate committee has recommended passing the Aged Care Legislation Amendment Bill with changes that would establish a rapid review pathway for disputed automated assessment outcomes.
Advocacy groups, including the Older Persons Advocacy Network (OPAN) and Council of the Ageing Australia, have responded to the proposals. OPAN chief executive Craig Gear OAM emphasized the necessity of a human review pathway to prevent unintended harm caused by algorithms that may fail to recognize complex individual care needs.
Additionally, the legislation seeks to permanently establish an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Aged Care Commissioner. This role is intended to address longstanding barriers to equitable and culturally safe care for Indigenous communities. While there is broad support for the reforms, advocates note that the current system sometimes allows computer programs to override the judgment of skilled assessment teams, highlighting the need for effective oversight.
