Australia proposes optional social media algorithms

The Australian government is considering new digital safety legislation that would allow users to opt out of social media algorithms. Under the proposed rules, technology companies such as Meta, Google, and TikTok could face significant penalties if they fail to provide users with the choice to switch off algorithmic feeds in favor of chronological or manual content delivery.

The government is currently evaluating whether users should be required to opt in or opt out of these algorithmic systems. Beyond user control over feeds, the legislation is expected to mandate that platforms implement protections against harmful material, including content promoting disordered eating and illegal pornography. While critics have raised concerns regarding potential censorship, the government maintains that the focus is on requiring platforms to identify and mitigate service-related risks.
