Australia releases draft standards for construction industry reform

The Australian federal government has released draft Commonwealth standards and a Draft Joint Construction Industry Charter for public feedback. These documents are part of the National Construction Industry Forum’s (NCIF) ‘Blueprint for the Future,’ which contains 44 recommendations intended to create a more productive, safe, and sustainable construction sector.

The proposed standards aim to address systemic industry challenges, including productivity, project delivery, and workforce outcomes, while attempting to avoid unnecessary regulatory burdens. Feedback on the standards can be submitted through the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations until October 16, 2026.

Peter Colacino, CEO of the Australian Constructors Association (ACA), noted that while the NCIF discussion paper shows progress among governments, industry, and unions, lasting reform requires addressing criminal elements and unlawful behavior. Colacino warned that the industry must tackle issues such as intimidation, coercion, bullying, and the misuse of workplace health and safety processes to ensure that productivity and workplace culture are genuinely improved.
