Australia retiree struggles to secure rental housing for elderly father
Michael Larkins, a retiree in Australia, has faced significant difficulties attempting to secure rental housing to provide full-time care for his 88-year-old father. Larkins described a “catch-22” situation where Centrelink required him to secure a property to qualify as a carer, yet real estate agencies refused his applications due to a lack of active employment income.
Despite having sufficient savings to cover long-term rent, Larkins reported being treated poorly by multiple agencies. In response to broader systemic issues, a government spokesperson noted that a discussion paper regarding the modernization of the Residential Tenancy Act has been released for consultation, which includes proposals for standardized rental applications.
