Australia retirement: Age pension eligibility and superannuation bonuses
Australians with significant superannuation balances may still qualify for the age pension due to means-testing rules. For those born on or after 1 January 1957, eligibility begins at age 67. The pension is subject to both assets and income tests, which determine the amount received based on total holdings, including superannuation, shares, and property. For example, single homeowners with assets between $333,001 and $745,750 are eligible for part-payments, while non-homeowner singles with assets under $600,000 may qualify for the full pension.
Separately, superannuation funds are increasingly offering retirement bonuses to members transitioning to the pension phase. These bonuses, which function as a refund of superannuation taxes no longer payable once a member moves to a tax-free pension, can amount to tens of thousands of dollars for high-balance members. While some funds like Colonial First State have recently introduced such offers, financial advisers caution that these bonuses should not overshadow more critical factors such as fund fees, administration quality, and investment performance when choosing a retirement fund.
