Australia reviews child abuse prevention website content
The Australian Attorney-General’s Department is reviewing a taxpayer-funded child abuse prevention website, Stop It Now Australia, following controversy over its guidance for individuals concerned about sexual attractions to children.
Critics, including some politicians and commentators, have targeted specific language in educational modules. Content under scrutiny includes messages advising users not to “beat yourself up” over sexual fantasies and stating that “having these thoughts does not mean you will act on them.” One module suggests that instead of trying to change sexual interests, the goal should be learning to manage thoughts, feelings, and fantasies.
The service also provides advice on seeking professional help, avoiding high-risk situations, building social connections, and avoiding certain behaviors during masturbation. While opponents argue the language is problematic, child protection experts and the federal government have defended the core concept of intervening to prevent harm before an offense occurs. The Attorney-General’s Department confirmed that changes have already been implemented on parts of the website and further reviews are underway.
