Australia seeks observer status in Melanesian Spearhead Group

Australia is applying for observer status within the Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG), a sub-regional organization dedicated to supporting decolonisation and self-determination for Melanesian peoples. During the Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting in Palau, Australian Minister for Pacific Island Affairs Pat Conroy confirmed the federal government’s intention to seek observer status, stating the government sees value in having the people of Australia represented through the Australian government in the group.

However, the bid has faced criticism for not committing to a formal role for Torres Strait Islanders, who represent Australia’s own Melanesian population. The MSG currently includes the governments of Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, and Vanuatu, as well as the Front de Libération Nationale Kanak et Socialiste (FLNKS) representing New Caledonia. The United Liberation Movement for West Papua also holds observer status.

MSG Director-General Dr Anna Naupa noted that the group is preparing for a mid-term review of its 25-year ‘2038 Prosperity for All’ strategy.
