Australia seeks tech support for online safety and AI regulation

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese met with Apple Executive Chair Tim Cook at Apple Park in California to discuss online safety and artificial intelligence regulation. Albanese stated that Australia requires global cooperation from tech giants to protect children from internet harms, noting that the country 'can’t do it alone.'

During the meeting, Cook reportedly described Australia’s social media regulations—including its December ban on social media use for children under 16—as 'world-leading.' Apple indicated it is developing new safety controls to assist families in managing digital use.

The Australian government is also advancing new legislative proposals. These include a 'duty of care' requirement for major social media platforms like TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram, and a 'My Feed, My Way' system that would allow users to opt out of algorithmic content recommendations. Additionally, Albanese announced that Australia intends to introduce new national standards for artificial intelligence by the end of the year to ensure human control over the technology.
