Australia sees surge in shopping trolley theft and abandonment

Reports indicate a significant rise in trolley abuse across Australia. According to the online platform Snap, Send, Solve, there were nearly 150,000 notifications regarding abandoned or stolen shopping trolleys in 2025.

This figure is more than double the 66,625 car thefts reported during the same period. The issue involves both the theft of trolleys for personal use and the abandonment of equipment in locations such as creeks, bushes, and sports ovals. Some analysts suggest the increase may be linked to economic instability and rising fuel costs.
