Australia solar and battery installations see record growth amid compliance concerns
Australia is experiencing a significant surge in residential renewable energy adoption. According to the Clean Energy Council, households installed over 180,000 rooftop solar systems and 276,000 home batteries in the first half of 2026. This growth is largely attributed to the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program, which has supported hundreds of thousands of installations and helped reverse a recent decline in solar volumes.
However, the rapid expansion has highlighted regulatory challenges. An inspection of 3,425 solar battery installations by the Clean Energy Regulator revealed that 62.28% were rated substandard due to technical non-compliance. While most of these systems remain safe to operate, 0.76% were classified as unsafe. The regulator noted that these issues stemmed from poor workmanship and non-compliant installation practices—such as incorrect labeling, loose connections, and inadequate wiring—rather than defects in the batteries themselves.
