Australia stem cell donor testing suspended nationwide

Stem cell donor recruitment and swab testing have been suspended across Australia, leaving cancer patients in a precarious position. The suspension follows the end of a contract for Stem Cell Donors Australia in June, with a replacement operator yet to be appointed despite expectations of a decision by August.

Rowan Tong-Law, a Brisbane resident diagnosed with cancer, faces significant difficulty finding a match due to his mixed English, Scottish, and Chinese heritage, which carries a one in 44 million chance of a match. While a potential donor was identified, their swab could not be processed due to the nationwide suspension of testing.

Advocates state the sector is in limbo. While Lifeblood offers an alternative pathway to the register, it is restricted to blood donors aged 18 and over. The Commonwealth government has stated that the ongoing tender process is unrelated to the suspension of swab testing.
