Australia seeks to block US execution livestream

Australian political leaders from across the spectrum are calling for efforts to block the potential live stream of a US firing squad execution. The execution of Nidal Malik Hasan, a former US Army major convicted of killing 13 people at a Texas military base in 2009, is reportedly scheduled for early December.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the prospect of a live-streamed execution as “abhorrent” and stated the government would seek advice on how to prevent the content from reaching Australian audiences. Cabinet minister Murray Watt also condemned the proposal, calling it “absolutely disgusting.”

Despite the political outcry, the Australian eSafety Commission has clarified that it currently lacks the proactive powers to prevent an online live stream from occurring. The regulator noted that while online services have responsibilities under the national safety framework to protect users from harmful material, direct prevention of a live broadcast is not within its existing authority.

The proposal to broadcast the execution was reportedly backed by US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, though US President Donald Trump has indicated a final decision on the matter may still be pending.
