Australia to exempt Robodebt compensation payouts from taxes

The Australian Federal Government is introducing legislation to ensure that compensation payouts for victims of the unlawful Robodebt scheme are exempt from Commonwealth taxation, income testing, and compensation recovery arrangements.

Following a class action settlement, approximately 125,000 people are expected to share $475 million in compensation. The Robodebt scheme, which operated from 2015 to 2019, used automated data to falsely accuse welfare recipients of owing money to the government. The scheme had severe consequences for vulnerable individuals, including extreme debt and mental health crises.

Government Services Minister Katy Gallagher stated that the move provides certainty that victims will receive the full amount they are entitled to without the total being reduced by government recovery schemes. Additionally, the payments will not be treated as income, ensuring they do not negatively impact other social security, veterans’ payments, or National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) support. The compensation is expected to be paid out before the end of 2026.
