Australia to introduce 30% minimum tax on real capital gains

New tax laws in Australia will introduce a minimum tax rate of 30 per cent on real capital gains accruing from July 1, 2027. According to Treasury, this rate applies in addition to indexation.

The new rules do not apply to capital gains that accrued before the effective date. Furthermore, individuals receiving any amount of the age pension are specifically exempt from this 30 per cent minimum capital gains tax on gains accruing after July 1, 2027.

For self-funded retirees, the minimum 30 per cent tax will apply to real gains arising from July 1, 2027, regardless of the value of the shares sold.
