Australian Government to invest $630 million in care sector wage increases

The Australian Federal Government will invest $630 million to support wage increases for more than 460,000 workers in the health, disability, and community services sectors. This funding follows a Fair Work Commission finding that these female-dominated industries have been historically undervalued due to gender-based assumptions.

The investment is intended to assist over 128,000 charities and not-for-profit organisations in implementing these changes without reducing essential services. Affected workers, many of whom are women, have already seen wage rises of up to 15 per cent as of 1 October, with further restructuring and residual increases scheduled for 2027.

In addition to direct care workers, the funding will support government-funded employees in sectors such as housing, youth services, legal assistance, and First Nations community services. Minister for Women Katy Gallagher stated that addressing the undervaluation of work performed predominantly by women is a critical step in closing the gender pay gap.
