Australia to Offer Free Electricity Three Hours Daily Starting July

From 1 July, the Australian government will allow residential consumers to use up to 24 kWh of electricity free of charge for three hours each day. The initial rollout covers New South Wales, the Greater Brisbane area, South Australia and Adelaide, with Victoria joining in October and the remaining states and territories slated to receive the benefit by 2027.

The scheme is made possible by a substantial surplus of solar power generated after the Albanese government accelerated renewable‑energy deployment since 2022. Private investment in renewables hit a record €5.5 billion in 2024, and photovoltaic systems are now installed on about five million Australian rooftops – more than a third of households – giving the country the world’s highest per‑capita share of household solar generation.

Officials present the policy as a matter of national security and industrial strategy, noting that greater reliance on renewables reduces vulnerability to geopolitical shocks such as those affecting the Strait of Hormuz. The free‑electricity offer is also intended to promote more conscious energy use during peak midday demand, especially as heatwaves drive higher consumption for air‑conditioning.
