Australia to retire Tigre helicopters by 2026

The Australian Ministry of Defence has announced that it will end operations of its 22 Tigre ARH (Armed Reconnaissance Helicopter) aircraft by the end of 2026. This decision accelerates the previously planned retirement, which was originally scheduled for 2027 or 2028.

Canberra cited both age and evolving battlefield conditions as primary reasons for the withdrawal. The Tigre helicopters, designed by Airbus, have been in service since 2004 and are reaching the end of their expected 20-year lifespan. Furthermore, the rise of modern anti-aircraft defenses and unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) has changed the operational environment, making traditional manned reconnaissance helicopters more vulnerable.

The Tigre fleet will be replaced by 29 Boeing AH-64E Apache helicopters. The Australian military describes the Apache as a ‘new generation’ platform that is better equipped to handle contemporary threats. Six Apache aircraft have already been delivered to the country.
