Australia rolls out bird flu vaccines for vulnerable native species
The Australian government has announced a vaccination rollout to protect vulnerable native bird species from the H5N1 bird flu strain. The program will prioritize animals in captivity, such as those in zoos and conservation programs, because vaccinating wild birds is difficult as they require two doses.
Authorities have secured approximately AU$2 million worth of H5N1 vaccines, totaling about 1,500 vials. Since the first case was detected in June, more than 230 infections have been confirmed across various states, including New South Wales, South Australia, Western Australia, Victoria, and Queensland. Tasmania recently recorded its first case following the discovery of a dead brown skua in Rocky Cape.
While the virus has caused mass mortality in some wildlife populations, including seabirds, officials state there is currently no evidence of the disease impacting the commercial poultry or agriculture sectors. In Victoria, plans are underway to vaccinate over 5,000 little penguins at Phillip Island and St Kilda.
