Australia trade deficit widens amid rising fuel and EV imports

Australia’s international trade deficit widened to $5.1 billion for the June quarter, the second consecutive deficit since 2017. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the deficit was driven by record values in fuel imports due to Middle East conflicts and a surge in passenger vehicle imports.

Electric vehicle (EV) uptake is a significant factor in this shift. Tesla recorded 7,685 sales in August, contributing to a trend where EVs have captured more than 20 percent of Australia’s new car market for three consecutive months. The Electric Vehicle Council noted that this growth indicates a “structural shift” in the automotive market as consumers weigh long-term costs and emissions.

While the trade deficit has grown, net trade rose by $0.7 billion over the last 12 months, which is expected to contribute approximately 0.1 percent to the upcoming GDP figures. The current account balance for the June quarter stood at a negative $27.2 billion.
