Australia: Ancient rainforests discovered in Greater Blue Mountains

Researchers from Western Sydney University, led by Eli Bendall, have discovered ancient rainforest ecosystems within the Greater Blue Mountains in New South Wales. Using high-resolution satellite imagery and field verification, the team found that the rainforest area is three to four times larger than previously estimated. These ecosystems contain plant lineages dating back approximately 180 million years to the Gondwana supercontinent.

The discovery identifies two new plant communities: Hawkesbury Warm Sheltered Gully Rainforest and Hawkesbury Subtropical-Dry Bench Rainforest. These areas were previously misidentified as eucalyptus forests.
