Australia updates critical minerals strategy
The Australian Federal Department of Industry, Science and Resources has announced an update to the nation’s critical minerals strategic plan. Resources Minister Madeleine King stated the revised strategy focuses on national security, economic resilience, and industrial capability, building upon existing initiatives such as the Critical Minerals Strategic Reserve and the Critical Minerals Production Tax Incentive.
The updated plan expands the original four core objectives into six focus areas: accelerating strategically important projects to production, attracting international investment and partnerships, engaging with First Nations for benefit sharing, showcasing Australia as a high-standard producer, lifting competitiveness through infrastructure and regulatory coordination, and growing a skilled workforce.
In a related development, the Australian Aluminium Council has urged the government to add bauxite, alumina, and aluminium to the Critical Minerals List ahead of the 2026 review. The council argues that such a move would align Australia with strategic partners like the United States, the United Kingdom, and the European Union, which already recognize these materials as critical. The council noted that while Australia is a major global producer of bauxite and alumina, these materials are currently only recognized on the separate Strategic Materials List.
