Australia urged to develop sovereign AI to capture economic value

Assistant Minister for Science, Technology and the Digital Economy, Andrew Charlton, has called for Australia to move up the Artificial Intelligence (AI) value chain. In a lecture at the ANU Crawford School, Charlton argued that the nation must leverage its existing data centre advantages to develop sovereign AI rather than merely acting as a host for data storage.

Charlton warned that without timely action, Australia risks becoming a permanent importer of intelligence, where economic value flows offshore. He noted that Australian AI spending is increasing by 20-40% quarterly and could reach twenty to forty billion dollars annually within a decade. He suggested that such spending could eventually rival the value of wheat exports, representing a massive recurring economic outflow.

To mitigate this, the government expects AI companies to support Australian start-ups, engage in research partnerships with local universities, and bring world-class talent to the country. This strategy is part of the National Data Centre Expectations, aiming to transform data centres from utilities into strategic economic catalysts.
