Australia video game industry reaches $4.2 billion in annual sales

The Australian video game industry reached $4.2 billion in consumer sales during the 2025 calendar year, marking a 12 per cent increase over the previous year. Mobile gaming remains the largest segment of the market, with sales exceeding $1.7 billion, while digital sales accounted for more than $1.4 billion.

Experts attribute this growth to the casualization of gaming and the rise of mobile devices, which has expanded the audience beyond younger demographics. Jonathan Pillai, Dean of Learning Futures at Curtin University, noted that the ability to engage with games in short increments on phones has made the medium accessible to a broader population.

Local developers are also gaining significant international attention. Adelaide-based Team Cherry has seen major success with its titles; following the global success of Hollow Knight, which sold over 15 million copies, the sequel Silksong sold more than seven million copies within three months of its release.
