Australia visa controversy involves Bassem Youssef and IDF soldiers

Comedian Bassem Youssef has been unable to perform his scheduled tour in Australia due to visa complications. Reports indicate that the Executive Council of Australian Jewry lobbied the Department of Home Affairs to prevent his entry, citing his past comments regarding religious and national communities. While the specific reasoning for the visa delay involves requests for Egyptian criminal records and passport issues, the intervention by the lobby group has resulted in the cancellation of his tour.

In contrast, a group of approximately 40 current and former Israel Defense Forces (IDF) soldiers will participate in the Sydney Marathon as a “peace delegation.” Their trip is funded by the Australia/Israel and Jewish Affairs Council and the Zionist Council of NSW. The delegation runs on behalf of the Israeli charity Shalva, which has published profiles of the participants, including officers who served during the recent conflict.
