Australia: Workers express climate skepticism as ACCC issues emissions guidance

New research from Curtin University reveals that most Australian workers believe large companies have a responsibility to address climate change, though many employees remain skeptical of actual progress. The study highlights that climate change is a growing workplace health and safety issue, particularly for frontline roles. Approximately 59 per cent of technicians, trades workers, and machinery operators reported working in temperature extremes, compared to 25 per cent of managers and professionals.

In response to concerns regarding environmental transparency, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has released new guidance for businesses making greenhouse gas emissions claims. The ACCC recommends that companies use credible, science-based accounting standards and be transparent about the use of purchased credits. The guidance aims to prevent greenwashing, noting that false or misleading environmental claims can breach Australian Consumer Law and disadvantage businesses making genuine sustainability investments.
