Australian activist Tran Hiep missing in Cambodia amid abduction claims

Australian-Vietnamese activist Tran Hiep and Norwegian-Vietnamese activist Nguyen Duc Thuan have disappeared in Cambodia, sparking allegations of transnational repression by Vietnamese authorities.

The activists, members of the pro-democracy group Viet Tan, were in Cambodia to meet with dissidents for training. They were last heard from on September 18. Viet Tan claims the men were abducted in Cambodia and forcibly taken into Vietnam, describing the official Vietnamese charges as fabricated.

Vietnamese authorities have detained three men, including Hiep and Thuan, on terrorism and document forgery charges, asserting they illegally entered Vietnam from the Cambodian border. The group has urged Australian and Norwegian governments to intervene, noting that Thuan requires daily insulin for diabetes.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated that the government is providing consular assistance and remains in contact with the family of Tran Hiep.
