Jimmy McKenzie, managing director of AgRec, notes that many visa holders prefer roles in tourism-heavy locations like Rottnest Island or beach towns over the demanding conditions of agricultural harvests.

McKenzie highlighted that even when backpackers with agricultural experience choose harvest work, the seasonal nature of the job—often lasting only eight to ten weeks—frequently fails to meet the duration required for visa compliance. This leads many workers to seek more stable, less physically intensive employment in service roles.

To mitigate labor shortages, the industry is increasingly looking toward university students and older workers, including those in their 60s, though skilled backpackers with heavy machinery experience remain vital for meeting capacity during critical periods.
