Australian agriculture faces rising cyberattack risks to food security

Increasing reliance on connected equipment, sensors, and third-party software in agriculture has heightened the risk of cyberattacks on the food supply chain. Industry experts warn that many farm businesses are unaware of their vulnerability to digital threats.

Recent incidents highlight these risks, including a cyberattack in France where hackers manipulated refrigeration systems, causing food spoilage in hundreds of supermarkets. In Australia, the sector has faced previous disruptions, such as a 2021 hack of meat processor JBS and a 2020 attack on Talman Software that impacted wool auctions. More recently, in June, Mackay Sugar reported a cyberattack by the Russian ransomware group The Gentlemen, which disrupted operations for over two weeks.

In response to these growing threats, the Australian federal government is developing a national food security strategy to protect the nation's $100 billion agricultural industry.
