Australian agriculture reaches $100 billion production milestone
Australian agriculture has reached a $101.4 billion farmgate production milestone, surpassing the $100 billion target set by the National Farmers' Federation in 2018. The industry value has grown from approximately $59.9 billion in 2017-18.
Growth has been concentrated in specific sectors. Livestock slaughter provided the largest dollar contribution, increasing from $18.7 billion to $35.3 billion, though much of this was driven by higher prices. Broadacre cropping, including grains, oilseeds, and pulses, saw the strongest production-led growth, adding over $15 billion.
While horticulture remained a consistent performer, other sectors such as wool, industrial crops, and live exports saw declines, collectively subtracting nearly $3 billion from the overall gains.
